REPORT: Twins to Tab Cleveland's Falvey as Ops Boss

After being initially floated by Twins Daily’s Jeremy Nygaard on Sunday night, it appears that multiple outlets have now confirmed that Cleveland Indians assistant general manager Derek Falvey will be named the president of baseball operations for the Minnesota Twins sometime in the near future. The team has yet to comment publicly.

Most likely, the caution exercised by the Twins are far as the process still being ongoing could either be tied to notifying those who were involved but not selected, or perhaps more likely waiting to name the second part of what is expected to be a two-pronged attack at filling the void left by departing general manager Terry Ryan.

Falvey, who is in his early-30s, is not the first youthful executive the Twins have ever had. Then-Twins owner Carl Pohlad hired Andy MacPhail as VP of player personnel back in 1985, and the next year named him GM at age 33 — the same age as Falvey. To expect Falvey to succeed as quickly as MacPhail — a World Series title the year later — did would be a fool’s errand, but he brings along quite a strong pedigree.

Falvey is a 2001 graduate of Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Mass. — the same prep school that produced NBA player Dan Gadzuric, NHL player Benn Ferriero, NFL player Robert Francois and even child actor Macaulay Culkin. From there, Falvey got a degree in economics at Trinity College, including spending a stint pitching for the school’s baseball team, and apparently based on his LinkedIn profile, spending a year abroad studying at UCL (University College London) — the largest postgraduate school in the United Kingdom by enrollment and a highly-regarded research university.

Falvey joined the Indians — the only professional organization he’s known — as a baseball operations intern after the 2007 season, and has ascended from spending a year there, to spending two years as an assistant in scouting ops, another year plus as assistant director of baseball ops, nearly four years as director of baseball ops, and now what’ll amount to almost exactly a year as the assistant to general manager Mike Chernoff and Chris Antonetti, the team’s former GM who has the same position Falvey will with the Twins.

Falvey is very well-regarded in baseball circles, and it’s for good reason. His pitching acumen should not be ignored; while his name only appears in the final sentence of this great article by Jeff Passan — who is tremendous in his own right — it’s an important kicker:

“And Derek Falvey, the Indians’ director of baseball operations and, in the eyes of many, a future general manager, oversees the Indians’ whole pitching program.”

Re-framed, think about it this way:

  • No team in the AL has a worse ERA than the Twins (5.12).
  • No team in the AL has a better ERA than the Indians (3.80).

It’s going to be an uphill climb, but it appears the Twins are ready to throw all they can at it.

As a brief aside, here is a YouTube channel by the name of Derek Falvey with some baseball scouting videos.
